How much does website maintenance cost in Australia?
Published July 2026 · By Manon Vernay
Website maintenance is the invoice small businesses understand least, which is why it is where small businesses get quietly overcharged most.
Here is what maintenance actually involves, what it costs in Australia, and how to tell a real care plan from a padded retainer.
What website maintenance actually is
Four jobs: keeping the software underneath current (security), keeping backups that actually restore, noticing problems before your customers do (monitoring), and making the small content changes a living business generates: new prices, new staff, new hours.
That last one is the one owners feel; the first three are the ones that save the business when something goes wrong.
The padded-retainer test
One question: "What did you do last month?" A real maintenance provider can answer in specifics (updates applied, backups verified, uptime, changes made). If the answer is a shrug or a jargon fog, you are paying a subscription for reassurance.
Ask for a monthly summary in plain English before you sign anything.
Why "no maintenance" is the most expensive plan
Google notices abandoned sites and ranks them down (it is pattern five in why small business websites fail). Software that never updates eventually gets exploited, and a hacked small business site typically costs more to clean up than years of a care plan.
The maths is boring, which is the point. Insurance usually is.
